HoudahGeo integrates with iPhoto, Aperture and Lightroom. This makes it easy to geotag photos that are managed by your favorite photo library.
For HoudahGeo to access metadata created by Lightroom, you need to make sure Lightroom writes metadata to either image files or to XMP sidecar files. Start by checking your catalog settings:
- Open Lightroom > Preferences…
- Go to Catalog Settings > Metadata
- Check “Automatically write changes into XMP”
Before tagging files with HoudahGeo, instruct Lightroom to save current metadata:
- Select the photos you want to process
- Right-click or control-click to show the context menu
- Select Metadata > Save Metadata to File
- Lightroom will write to either image files or to XMP sidecar files
Proceed to geocoding your files in HoudahGeo:
- In the top left corner of the HoudahGeo window, select “Load”
- Use the image browser to locate your photos
- Drag photos into your HoudahGeo project
HoudahGeo will ask for information about your camera’s clock. Digital cameras record the exact time each photo was taken. Most cameras however fail to specify in which time zone the recorded time is expressed.
Fortunately setting this up in HoudahGeo couldn’t be easier. HoudahGeo provides several ways to specify camera clock time zone and clock error. One option is to simply enter the current time as displayed on the camera.
You can now geotag your photos. HoudahGeo offers many options:
- Automatic. Using a GPS track log
- From reference photos taken using a GPS-enabled camera or phone
- Using built-in maps to set or adjust locations
- Using Google Earth to set or adjust locations
- By attaching image to GPS waypoints
To save geotags back to your image files:
- In the top left corner of the HoudahGeo window, select “Output”
- Click the “EXIF / XMP Export” button
- Select the “Tag masters / originals” option
- Deselect the “Create copies” option
- Deselect the “Bypass XMP sidecars” option
- Deselect the “Always write XMP sidecars” option
Next you need to load the new metadata into you Lightroom catalog:
- Select the photos you want to process
- Right-click or control-click to show the context menu
- Select Metadata > Read Metadata from File
- Lightroom read the metadata as modified by HoudahGeo
Refer to the HoudahGeo User’s Manual for more information on geocoding and publishing your photos.
