Master Quick Metadata Editing in HoudahGeo

HoudahGeo and Photos Workbench share a smart little feature that often goes unnoticed—until it magically saves you dozens of clicks and a lot of time.

If you manage large collections of geotagged photos, you know that adding titles, descriptions, and keywords can quickly become a tedious chore:
Click on a photo. Click on the field. Type. Click the next photo. Click the field again… repeat hundreds of times.

But what if you could cut that process in half—and dramatically speed up your workflow?

HoudahGeo’s streamlined quick editing feature transforms this repetitive task into a smooth, efficient process that could save you hours of work.

The Magic of Streamlined Quick Editing

Here’s the game-changer: HoudahGeo intelligently keeps your keyboard focus exactly where you need it. When editing metadata across multiple photos, the app assumes you’re continuing the same task—and it’s usually right.

That means less clicking, fewer distractions, and a much faster way to annotate your photos.

How It Works

  1. Select your first photo in the list or grid view.

  2. Locate the Inspector pane on the right side of the project window.

  3. Click the Other Metadata tab to access title, description, and keyword fields.

  4. Click once in the Title field and type your title.

  5. Use Photo > Select Next from the menu, or press the Command–Right Arrow shortcut, to move to the next photo.

  6. Just start typing—no need to click again!

The photo preview updates to show the new selection, but your text cursor stays in the same field. This seemingly small detail adds up to massive time savings when working through dozens—or hundreds—of photos.

Time-Saving Tips for Maximum Efficiency

  1. Use Keyboard Shortcuts
Mastering a few shortcuts makes a big difference. Use Command–Right Arrow to select the next photo without reaching for your mouse.

  2. Batch Similar Photos
Before you begin, sort your photos by date, location, or event. This makes it easier to apply consistent titles and keywords to related images.

  3. Develop a Naming System
Use a consistent structure for titles. For example:
"Location – Subject – Date" or "Event Name – Sequence Number – Key Detail".

  4. Copy and Modify
For similar photos, copy and paste a base title (Command-C, Command-V), then tweak the details—like adding a sequence number—before jumping to the next photo with Command–Right Arrow.

Streamlined Quick Editing may be a small feature—but it delivers big results. Whether you’re documenting a hiking trip, cataloging research photos, or preparing an archive, HoudahGeo helps you get through your metadata work faster—and with fewer clicks.
